Environmental and petroleum-derived samples can contain strongly retained matrix components. Use appropriate cleanup and filtration to reduce fouling, and consider a guard column for routine sample sequences.
Begin with an aqueous-organic gradient and optimize the stronger organic portion for late-eluting PAHs. Pay close attention to solvent purity and blank performance because trace contamination can produce ghost peaks.
Monitor resolution of critical PAH pairs, retention repeatability, background response and pressure. Establish a defined wash step to remove strongly retained material between batches.
